Spanish Airport Traffic evolution – August 2013 Airports

Aena has published the statistics related to the Spanish Airports between January and August 2013. You can find a copy of the spreadsheet here. It shows detail on the traffic evolution at each airport. New Menorca based startup to be presented this week Airlines

According to the information from hosteltur, Mariano Bendito and Lorenzo Moll, two entrepreneurs from Menorca, are working on a new Menorca based startup for the island which may solve its lack of connectivity. They already have the support from the Balearic institutions, a bank and several other entrepreneurs. Also, they would count with the “Aena’s receptiveness”.The project will be presented on the 13th of September and would foresee the lease of three 109-seater Fokker-100’s and one 78-seater Fokker-70 to operate interisland flights as well as to connect Menorca with other Spanish cities. Swissport Spain calls for an indefinite time strike Airports,Handling

According to the media, Swissport Spain calls for an indefinite time strike after lack of agreement with Swissport Spain. This strike would be as from 10th August and according to the media would affect to Barcelona, Jerez, Almería, Alicante, Málaga, Fuerteventura, Valencia and Madrid cargo terminal with specific calendars, so we suggest contacting your local staff or agents for further clarify.According to the media, Unions say that Swissport is not complying with the agreed CPI increase and the agreed shifts system. On the other hand, media explain how Swissport Handling (which serves Madrid and Lanzarote airports) reached an agreement with UGT and USO Unions but not with CCOO (the other main union). 995,000 Russian passengers used the Spanish airports in 2008. In 2012 these numbers were doubled to reach 2.1 million.The main increase has taken place in Barcelona where they tripled passengers figures to get 1.2 million in 2012. Madrid increased these passengers by 24% in the last 5 years.Tenrife South had over 173,300 passengers from the Russian Federation in 2012. Despite the 54 million euro investment to improve the facilities, the figures of Valencia airport are not getting any better.According to the information published by Aena, Valencia lost passengers by 0.6% with regard to May 2012.Only low cost airlines can keep the airport operating, since they bring 60% of the passengers—information from Valencia Turism provided by Aena—to Valencia.Ryanair is the first operator at the aiport.
